Strangely enough, Slackware 10.2 is being prepared currently, rather than the Slackware 11 that I would venture the bulk of the community was expecting. The problem with this: Slackware 11 is expected to incorporate the 2.6 kernel series. 10.2 will continue the 2.4 series, which means Zach will continue to lock on first boot without a kernel parameter or kernel reload. Of course, being a Gentoo freak now means that I would just compile my own, but the point still stands.
Of course, 10.2 will be the first Slack release to ship without Gnome. This would have broken my heart (at least academically, not like I really used it) a while back, but now I am overjoyed. Who knows what KDE version will ship (well, I’m sure a lot of people know, but I don’t follow it anymore).
At this point, Slack is like an ex-girlfriend; I’m not interested, but I still keep an eye out for what it’s doing. Gentoo has been great, although I’m excited for them to yank KDE 3.4.2 out of testing. That’s going to be a heck of a compile when that gets pushed to the mainline.
MythTV actually works. I’m not using it currently, but it works.
Aside: Kerri Underwood is already doing Kit Kat commercials? Wowee. That didn’t take long.
I’m wondering when MythTV 0.19 will come out. It’s been a while since the last update.
Also: where is OpenOffice 2.0 Final? I was under the assumption we were looking at a July release date, even with delay. The website seems to be falling out of date, and nothing seems to be happening.
In the meantime, KWord is really good. KSpread…not so much. As much of an Excel freak as I am, I would be pretty tempted to start submitting patches to KSpread. It’s just a disaster right now.
The series Firefly is great, by the way. I’m thoroughly hooked. One more DVD to go, then the upcoming movie, which supposedly finishes what Fox hacked and slashed. Too bad.
For having many of the positive elements of Buffy (Joss Wheedon created both series), it doesn’t feel like Buffy. Not quite as much faux Kung Fu. The Western/sci-fi motif is one of the most striking efforts of creativity I have seen in a television series.
Worth a look. The series isn’t too expensive on DVD, and every copy bought is a punch in the face for Fox Television.
I encourage my media-savvy cynics to watch the current marketing schemes for women’s products. Notice the constant references or implications toward luxury spas. Doubtful? Try this. Linens ‘n’ Things has a major sort category called “Beauty / Spa.”
Why, oh please why, would I care about this? Because the “spa” thing almost always carries a heavy overtone: forget about your husband, your family, your job. Screw all ‘dat. Have a spa.
Interesting marketing angle, especially after the glorification of the multitasker, always-on single mom. What’s going on, here? Seems like a societal push toward a what-will-make-me-happy thing. Example: the proliferation of reality-style makeover shows. Essentially self-improvement for the sake of happiness, not health.
Interesting… at least to me.
Another domestic marketing observation: has it become apparent that we have reverted to all things disposable? What happened to the three R’s of environmental greenieness? Another divergence from 90’s social/environmental progressivism? Disposable broom heads? What are we doing here?
In an effort to shake things up now that I am a degreed person, I am attempting to grow out my hair to a longer length. The goal of this is to eliminate the three- to four-week required haircut interval that I currently experience as a result of my enslavement to the #2 clipper guard. Here is the goal:
I have concealed this person’s identity with The Gimp. I don’t really know why I did that, except that it was fun to smear his face. Anyway… if I ever reach the goal I will reveal his identity.
As soon as my camera battery recharges (or more likely, tomorrow), I will post the current progress. This isn’t interesting, but it’s a blog. So that fits.
