The Spa Thing
I encourage my media-savvy cynics to watch the current marketing schemes for women’s products. Notice the constant references or implications toward luxury spas. Doubtful? Try this. Linens ‘n’ Things has a major sort category called “Beauty / Spa.”
Why, oh please why, would I care about this? Because the “spa” thing almost always carries a heavy overtone: forget about your husband, your family, your job. Screw all ‘dat. Have a spa.
Interesting marketing angle, especially after the glorification of the multitasker, always-on single mom. What’s going on, here? Seems like a societal push toward a what-will-make-me-happy thing. Example: the proliferation of reality-style makeover shows. Essentially self-improvement for the sake of happiness, not health.
Interesting… at least to me.
Another domestic marketing observation: has it become apparent that we have reverted to all things disposable? What happened to the three R’s of environmental greenieness? Another divergence from 90’s social/environmental progressivism? Disposable broom heads? What are we doing here?
